Vorwort
Goffman in Asylums, del 1961, mostra come il manicomio promuova la carriera di malato mentale. L'istituzione mortifica la persona, ne smonta l'individualità, la omologa e crea così degli internati ridotti all'obbedienza e uniformati nei bisogni, che possono essere gestiti in maniera procedurale standardizzata. Il manicomio non era quindi un ospedale inadeguato, ma una macchina perfetta per gestire, con poche risorse, una vasta popolazione-scarto. Nella seconda parte vengono passati in rassegna i percorsi terapeutici previsti dall'attuale ordinamento della psichiatria di comunità italiana inseguendo il sospetto che essi celino analoghi meccanismi responsabili di promuovere la carriera di malato mentale in maniera quantitativamente minore, ma non qualitativamente diversa, dal manicomio. Infine si esplorano, sommariamente, prospettive correttive per una evoluzione virtuosa dell'attuale modello di psichiatria di comunità.
