Le priorità dei finanziamenti per la ricerca sulla salute mentale nei Paesi ad alto reddito deve mantenere un equilibrio tra gli investimenti a lungo termine per la ricerca sulle basi neurobiologiche dei disturbi mentali e gli investimenti a breve termine per la ricerca su nuove strategie preventive e terapeutiche che possano alleggerire il peso della malattia mentale che oggi grava sui pazienti, le famiglie e la comunità. Dare maggiore priorità a un'area di ricerca scientifica piuttosto che a un'altra rischia di ridurre i guadagni dell'intero portfolio degli investimenti nella salute mentale. (Questo testo è un editoriale uscito nel n. 6/2016 del British Journal of Psychiatry, e in questa traduzione italiana è seguìto da due interventi di discussione, rispettivamente di Andrea Fagiolini e Giacomo Rizzolatti).
