La sociologia contemporanea si trova a dover fare i conti con il fardello rappresentato dalla dicotomia cultura - struttura, la cui responsabilità è generalmente attribuibile alla sociologia culturale. L'autore affronta quattro assunti tra loro correlati: (1) Non si è mai giunti ad una definizione univoca di cultura, facendo della sociologia culturale un campo incapace di definire il proprio concetto centrale; (2) mantenere questa dicotomia significa ignorare il fatto che per spiegare il comportamento sociale occorre tenere in considerazione sia struttura che cultura; la cultura non può essere la causa di se stessa; (3) la sociologia culturale è soft ed emotiva, evita il conflitto così come il dibattito politico; (4) tralascia le questioni politiche e la ricerca politicamente orientata molto più di quanto non faccia il resto della sociologia. Ad ogni modo, la sociologia strutturale ha anch'essa alcuni limiti, ed è la stessa dicotomia cultura-struttura che andrebbe abbandonata.
