Le Comunita Psicogeriatriche del Centro S. Ambrogio Fatebenefratelli di Cernusco sul Naviglio prendono avvio nell'anno 2000 come Progetto Sperimentale approvato dalla Regione Lombardia e operano nell'ambito della rete dei servizi psichiatrici, con la funzione di "Comunita protette ad alta assistenza" (CPA). Nell'articolo vengono illustrate le caratteristiche delle Comunita e i risultati di una survey condotta con l'obiettivo di descrivere il profilo demografico e clinico dei pazienti. La survey rientra in un piu ampio progetto di riorganizzazione delle attuali Comunita, che intende offrire risposte terapeutico-riabilitative piu conformi all'ampio spettro di bisogni psichiatrici, sanitari e assistenziali presentato dai pazienti. Prendendo spunto dall'esperienza di questi anni, dai risultati della survey e dai dati della letteratura, vengono discussi alcuni temi che caratterizzano la psichiatria dell'eta anziana, soprattutto nel setting residenziale.
