La memoria autobiografica è la memoria riferita al Sé e si fonda sui sistemi di memoria episodica e semantica. Gli studi che si concentrano sulla specificità con cui i ricordi autobiografici vengono recuperati rappresentano una particolare linea di ricerca all'interno degli studi sulla memoria autobiografica. Molte ricerche hanno confermato l'esistenza di una tendenza a richiamare ricordi categoriali (ovvero ricordi riferiti a una "classe" di eventi) e non ricordi specifici - tendenza definita ipergeneralizzazione della memoria (overgeneral memo-ry) - come condizione stabile associata in particolare a depressione e disturbo da stress post traumatico. Il presente lavoro discute le principali teorie relative al fenomeno della ipergene-ralizzazione della memoria e ipotizza un'influenza dell'attaccamento sullo stile di rievocazione autobiografica, e in particolare sulla specificità della memoria autobiografica, ovvero sulla flessibilità nella regolazione del livello di specificità su cui un individuo si sofferma durante una ricostruzione autobiografica e sulla sua capacità di rievocare episodi specifici per tempo e luogo, accompagnati dall'esperienza soggettiva del "ricordare".
